Ko e mape
Bi’r al ‘Abd is a town in North Sinai, Egypt. It sits on the main road along the northern coast of the peninsula, between the Suez Canal zone and Al Arish. The name refers to a well, a reminder that settlement in this dry landscape has always depended on the few water sources along the route between Africa and the Levant.
From above, the town stretches along the highway in a long, narrow form, with blocks of streets on either side and open sand around them. To the north lies Lake Bardawil, a wide, shallow lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a thin sandbar. The lagoon is known for its fishing and for the migrating birds that pass through each year.
A Bi’r al ‘Abd map poster shows a place defined by movement and edges: the road that brings travellers and goods, the lagoon shore, and the dunes that begin where the streets stop. It is a spare, graphic subject, well suited to a minimal black-and-white treatment that leaves the surrounding desert as open paper.
The coastal road cuts straight through the town. It is the backbone of the layout, and most streets and buildings are arranged along it.
North of the town, the large, shallow lagoon spreads toward a narrow barrier of sand. Its long, curving shoreline is a soft counterpoint to the straight road.
Beyond the built-up area the map falls away into sand with few roads, so the town appears as a clear, compact shape against almost empty ground.
