Bitterfeld-Wolfen was created in 2007 when Bitterfeld, Wolfen and several neighbouring communities merged into one town in Saxony-Anhalt. From above it reads as two distinct street networks linked by roads, rail lines and large industrial sites. Chemical plants and a film factory shaped the area through the twentieth century. It was in Wolfen that Agfa introduced its pioneering colour film in 1936.
The biggest change to the map came after lignite mining ended. The open-cast pits east of Bitterfeld were flooded and became the Große Goitzsche, a large lake with irregular shores, peninsulas and bays. On a monochrome print its outline dominates one side of the town, a soft organic shape set against the rectilinear blocks of the old industrial districts.
A Bitterfeld-Wolfen map poster shows how a working landscape was rebuilt. Rail corridors, housing estates from the GDR era, older town centres and the new waterfront all sit on the same sheet. People who grew up here will recognise the contrast straight away. The layered structure also appeals to anyone interested in industrial heritage.

Bitterfeld and Wolfen keep separate centres with their own street patterns, linked by roads and rail across the industrial land between them.
Large factory sites and railway tracks form wide, simple blocks, which on the print contrast with the finer grain of residential streets.

For many people this is a map of the place where their parents worked or where they grew up among the chemical works. It also records one of Germany's most visible landscape transformations, from mine to lake.
