Ko e mape
Boksitogorsk lies in the east of Leningrad Oblast, surrounded by coniferous forest, bogs and small lakes. Its name comes from bauxite. The town was built in the Soviet period to mine the local deposits and process the ore into alumina, and the works and quarries still shape how it looks from above.
On a map, Boksitogorsk splits into two parts. One is a residential area of regular Soviet-era blocks and straight streets. The other is a large industrial zone with long rectangular buildings, rail sidings and the scars of open pits. Beyond both, the forest spreads out in all directions, broken only by roads, clearings and water.
A Boksitogorsk map poster shows a town made for a single purpose, with a clear planned structure. The grid of the living area, the angular industrial footprint and the soft edges of the surrounding forest and marsh create a composition that is both orderly and remote.
The residential area is laid out in regular blocks with straight streets. This planned structure is typical of Soviet industrial towns and shows up clearly in black and white.
The processing plant and its rail connections take up a large, angular area near the town. It is the main reason Boksitogorsk exists.
Dense forest and wetland surround the town on all sides. On the poster they become a quiet, open field that frames the built area.
