Ko e mape
Bruchsal lies north of Karlsruhe, right on the line where the rolling Kraichgau hills drop down to the flat Upper Rhine plain. On the map the town reflects both sides. Straighter streets and railway lines spread over the plain to the west, while roads to the east begin to curve with the rising ground.
The town's centrepiece is the Baroque palace built in the eighteenth century as a residence for the prince-bishops of Speyer. Its long, symmetrical wings and formal garden axes cut a strict geometric shape into the street plan. The palace now houses, among other things, the German Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments.
Much of Bruchsal was destroyed in an air raid in March 1945, and the palace was later carefully rebuilt. The Saalbach stream runs through the town. A Bruchsal map poster shows an ordered Baroque centre set within a modern town at the edge of two landscapes.
The prince-bishops' residence and its garden form a strongly symmetrical block of axes and courtyards. It is the most geometric shape on the poster.
The western districts spread over the flat Rhine plain, while the east climbs into the Kraichgau, so the street pattern loosens and curves from one side of the map to the other.
Several rail lines meet in Bruchsal and fan out across the town, drawing long, confident lines through the street network toward Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and beyond.
