Bushekeri is in Nyamasheke District, in Rwanda's Western Province. It lies in high, steep country between the southern part of Lake Kivu and the western edge of Nyungwe, one of Africa's great montane rainforests. From above the land is a sequence of rounded hills and deep valleys, crossed by winding roads and marked by the regular rows of tea plantations.
Tea is the defining crop in this part of Rwanda, and the estates near Nyungwe are among the country's best known. On a map, plantations and processing sites appear as ordered blocks among the more irregular smallholder fields, while roads follow the contours in long curves. The main route toward Nyungwe passes close by, a strong line through otherwise gentle detail.
A Bushekeri map poster suits families from Nyamasheke, tea workers and their children, and travellers who stayed near the forest to track chimpanzees or cross the canopy walkway in Nyungwe. It is a landscape of slopes and greenery rather than streets, and in print the fine lines of roads and paths show just how folded this corner of Rwanda is.
Plantations cover the hillsides in orderly blocks, their access roads drawn as neat, repeated lines that contrast with the looser pattern of village paths.
The road toward Nyungwe bends along the contours in long curves, the boldest line on the map and the route most visitors take into the area.
In a wider frame, the boundary of Nyungwe appears where the network of roads and paths suddenly stops, leaving a large, quiet expanse of unmarked space.

For Rwandans with roots in the west, the hills of Nyamasheke are an essential picture of home. For visitors, this map recalls misty mornings between the tea and the forest, and it holds both stories equally well.
