Butare, officially known today as Huye, sits in the hills of southern Rwanda, and like most Rwandan towns it follows the landscape. Roads run along ridges and wind around slopes, neighbourhoods cling to hillsides, and the valleys between them are often left green, so the map shows a town spread in fingers rather than a single compact block.
The town is Rwanda's longstanding academic centre. The country's first national university was founded here in 1963, and its campus, now part of the University of Rwanda, is a large, clearly defined area on the map.
