Calauag lies on the eastern side of Quezon province, on the shore of a broad bay that opens to the waters north of the Bondoc Peninsula area. The town centre sits close to the coast, and from above it appears as a small cluster of streets where the Maharlika Highway, the main road running down Luzon, passes near the water.
Beyond the centre, the municipality spreads into a wide rural area. Barangay roads follow the coastline and the river valleys inland, with rice fields, coconut groves and low hills filling the spaces in between. Along the bay, the shoreline adds a long, irregular edge to the map, broken in places by river mouths and small inlets.
