Casarano is a town in the province of Lecce, in the Salento peninsula of southern Apulia. From above, it has the typical shape of a Salento town: a dense historic centre of narrow streets, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and roads that loop around the edge.
The town is known for the church of Santa Maria della Croce, often called Casaranello, which contains early Christian mosaics considered among the oldest in southern Italy. In the twentieth century Casarano also became a centre of the footwear industry, shaping its growth beyond the old core.
