Ko e mape
Castricum lies on the North Holland coast between Alkmaar and Beverwijk, and its map is split into two very different halves. To the west, a wide belt of dunes covers the ground with winding paths and irregular hollows, running all the way to the beach at Castricum aan Zee. To the east are the older village streets, newer residential loops and, beyond them, the flat, ruled geometry of Dutch polder land.
The dunes belong to the North Holland Dune Reserve, a protected landscape that also plays a part in the region's water supply. On a map it is almost empty of streets, which is exactly why it looks striking: a large calm area beside the busier town. The railway runs north to south through Castricum, a clear line separating the dunes from the polders.
A Castricum map poster captures this contrast between wild coast and ordered settlement. The town's streets gather around the old centre and the station, and a single road runs out through the dunes to the sea. Both halves have their own rhythm, and together they make a balanced, quiet composition.
West of the town, a broad, protected dune landscape is crossed only by thin, winding paths. On the poster it becomes a wide, open field of light texture.
A single route runs through the dunes to Castricum aan Zee. It is a simple, readable line linking the town to the North Sea shore.
East of the centre, the land turns into flat polders with straight ditches and roads. Their ruled lines contrast neatly with the curves of the dunes.
