Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of mainland Greece, and it has one of the most complex outlines in the region. The island sprawls in several directions, with long ridges, headlands and deep gulfs. On the west, the Paliki peninsula curls around the Gulf of Argostoli and creates a large enclosed bay that looks almost like an inland sea on the map.
Argostoli, the capital, sits on a narrow inlet off the gulf. Its street grid was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, which destroyed most of the island's towns. A stone causeway, the De Bosset Bridge, crosses the shallow lagoon beside the town. Across the water, Lixouri faces Argostoli from the Paliki peninsula, and a short ferry connects the two.
Mount Ainos, the island's highest point, rises in the south and is covered by a national park of endemic Cephalonian fir. Myrtos Beach lies at the foot of steep cliffs on the northwest coast, and near Sami the underground lake of Melissani lies beneath a collapsed cave roof. A Cephalonia map poster brings all of this together: mountains, gulfs and towns shaped by the sea.
The wide, sheltered gulf between the Paliki peninsula and the main body of the island forms a broad enclosed shape. Argostoli and Lixouri face each other across it.
At Argostoli a long, low stone bridge crosses the shallow Koutavos lagoon. It draws a fine straight line across the water at the edge of the town.
The island's highest mountain rises in the southern interior, its slopes covered in Cephalonian fir. It gathers the contour lines into a long ridge above the coast.

Ko e ha Cephalonia
Cephalonia draws visitors back to its beaches, villages and mountain roads, and many families trace their roots to villages rebuilt after 1953. The island's complicated outline makes a map with real depth and detail.
You can put your village in the title and a date or occasion in the subtitle, and set the coordinates line however you like. Choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then order a framed print or download the HD files.
