Changsha, the capital of Hunan, is organised around the Xiang River, which runs almost due north through the city in a broad, straight channel. The older commercial centre lies on the east bank, dense with streets and newer towers. The west bank was once quieter and now holds universities, hills and a growing district of new development.
In the middle of the river lies Orange Isle, a narrow island several kilometres long. Its southern tip holds a large sculpture of the young Mao Zedong, who studied in Changsha. Across the water, Yuelu Mountain rises in a green mass above Hunan University and the Yuelu Academy, one of China's most celebrated historic academies, founded more than a thousand years ago.
Changsha is also known for the Mawangdui tombs, Han dynasty burials whose remarkably preserved finds are displayed in the Hunan Museum. They include silk garments and lacquerware more than two thousand years old. A Changsha map poster traces the river, the island and the mountain together, the three features that have defined the city's shape for centuries.

A long, slender island in the middle of the river. It appears as a thin sliver of land between the two banks and is one of the city's most recognisable shapes.
On the west bank, the forested mountain forms a large open area on the map, framed by university campuses and the streets of the academic district at its foot.

Changsha is hung by graduates of its universities, by families from across Hunan and by anyone who has spent evenings along the Xiang. The river and island form a strong vertical line that works well in a portrait frame.
