Chetouane sits right beside Tlemcen in north-western Algeria, on the high ground north of the mountains that shelter the old city. It has grown quickly as Tlemcen has expanded, and today it hosts a large part of the region's university and residential growth, while still keeping links to the farmland that surrounds it.

Near the older parts, the streets are closer together and less regular; further out, newer districts are laid out in broader, more planned blocks, with wide roads connecting them to Tlemcen.
