Chhāta is a town in Mathura district in western Uttar Pradesh, in the Braj region linked to the life of Krishna. It lies on the main highway between Delhi and Agra, and that road runs straight through the map, with the dense town packed on either side and flat, cultivated land of the Yamuna plain spreading out around it.
The old core is a tight network of narrow lanes and closely built houses. Its best-known structure is a large Mughal-era sarai, a fortified rest house built for travellers on the imperial road, whose walled enclosure still shows as a clear rectangle on the map. Newer building has spread outward along the highway.
A Chhāta map poster also places the town among the pilgrimage sites of Braj. Barsana and Nandgaon, both linked to the stories of Radha and Krishna and famous for their Holi celebrations, lie a short distance to the west, and Mathura and Vrindavan are to the south.
The walled rest house built for travellers on the old imperial road forms a clear rectangle among the dense lanes of the old town.
The national highway runs straight through Chhāta, drawing a strong line across the poster along which much of the newer town has grown.
Narrow, irregular lanes and closely built houses make a dark, intricate texture in the centre, very different from the open fields around it.

Ko e ha Chhāta
Chhāta means a great deal to families from Mathura district and to pilgrims who travel through Braj. A map of its lanes and sarai is a lasting reminder of home or of a journey through Krishna's country.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a family name, a date or a line in Hindi, and edit the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the warm plain of Braj well.
