Choi Wan is a public housing estate in east Kowloon, in Wong Tai Sin District, on rising ground near Ngau Chi Wan and Choi Hung. Its name means colourful clouds. Like many estates built on Hong Kong's slopes, it is laid out along roads that follow the terrain, with residential towers placed on terraces cut into the hillside.
From above, the estate is a pattern of repeated building footprints, open courts, playgrounds and service roads rather than a conventional street grid. Below it, the flatter land of Kowloon fills with denser blocks and major roads, while green slopes rise behind. A Choi Wan map poster shows the meeting of the hill edge and the high-density city in a single frame.
It is a portrait of everyday Hong Kong, a place where many families have lived for decades, taken the bus down the hill and walked their children to school. In black and white, the looping roads and angular towers become a precise, almost architectural drawing that belongs to this corner of Kowloon and nowhere else.
Housing blocks sit on levels cut into the slope, so the map shows a stepped arrangement of building footprints and short connecting roads instead of a regular urban grid.
Roads wind up from the main routes of east Kowloon to reach each part of the estate. Their loops and hairpin bends give the design a sense of height.
The frame splits naturally between the dense street pattern of Kowloon on the lower ground and the quieter green slopes above, a contrast typical of Hong Kong.

Ko e ha Choi Wan
For people who grew up on the estate, or whose parents still live there, a map of Choi Wan holds a very particular set of memories, often more personal than a skyline view. It makes a meaningful gift for family members who have moved overseas.
