Cianorte, in the northwest of the Brazilian state of Paraná, was founded in 1953 as part of a colonisation project run by the Companhia Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná, the company behind several planned towns in the region. Its map still shows that intention: a clearly organised centre, wide main avenues and neighbourhoods arranged around them rather than growing by chance.
The surrounding landscape is gently rolling farmland, once covered in coffee plantations, and the edges of the town meet it abruptly. Small streams and strips of preserved woodland cut through the fringes, forming irregular green lines against the neat blocks. Today Cianorte is widely known as a centre of the clothing industry, with a large wholesale trade in garments.
