Çiğli is a district of İzmir on the northern side of the Gulf of İzmir, stretching across level ground between the water and the low hills inland. Its map reads as a sequence of broad residential blocks and wide avenues, most of them laid out in recent decades as the city expanded north around the bay.
To the west, the built area gives way to one of the most important coastal wetlands in Turkey. The Gediz Delta, with its salt pans, lagoons and marshes, is home to large flamingo colonies and a protected bird sanctuary known as the İzmir Bird Paradise.
