The town sits in the Piedmont of South Carolina, where the land rolls toward the Blue Ridge, and Lake Hartwell pushes long, fingered inlets right up to its edges. The campus stands on land that once belonged to the Fort Hill estate of John C. Calhoun, and the town took its name from Thomas Green Clemson, whose bequest founded the school.
