Coachella is a city in Riverside County, California, in the eastern part of the Coachella Valley. The valley floor is flat, and the city's map follows a firm grid: long straight avenues run east to west and north to south, dividing the land into large squares of neighbourhoods, fields and orchards. Interstate 10 passes along the northern edge.
Agriculture shapes much of the surrounding land. The area is known for dates, grapes and citrus, and date palm groves appear on the map as regular blocks set between the streets. Irrigation canals and the valley's stormwater channel add long lines across the desert floor, while the mountains rise at the edges of the valley.
