Colorado is a municipality in the north of Paraná, near the border with São Paulo state, in a region settled largely during the twentieth-century expansion of coffee farming. Like many towns founded in that period, it was laid out on a regular grid, and the map shows it clearly: straight streets and square blocks, a few avenues crossing the centre, and fields pressing close on every side.
The surrounding land is highly productive, with deep red soils that once supported coffee and now carry soybeans, corn and sugarcane among other crops. The Paranapanema River, which marks the boundary with São Paulo, lies to the north, and local roads link Colorado with neighbouring towns in the region.
