Cortland is the seat of Cortland County in central New York, between Syracuse and Binghamton. It is often called the Crown City, a name tied to its high position among the surrounding hills. On a map the city fills a broad valley where branches of the Tioughnioga River meet, with ridges rising on either side.
The downtown is a regular grid centred on Main Street, and residential streets continue that pattern outward until the slopes interrupt it. SUNY Cortland occupies higher ground on the city's edge, and its campus paths and athletic fields form a looser area of curves and open space. Interstate 81 runs along the eastern side of the valley.
