Cuíto, also spelled Kuito, is the capital of Bié province and lies high on the central plateau of Angola, at around 1,700 metres. Its map shows a modest colonial-era centre of straight streets and squares. Around it is a much larger ring of informal neighbourhoods, whose paths and lanes spread across the gently rolling land in every direction.
Before independence the town was called Silva Porto, after a Portuguese trader and explorer who settled in the area in the nineteenth century. Cuíto lies on the Benguela Railway, which crosses Angola from the Atlantic port of Lobito toward the eastern border. The track draws a clear, steady line through the town and across the plateau around it.
During the civil war, Cuíto endured a long siege in the early 1990s that left much of the town damaged, and it has been steadily rebuilt since. A Cuíto map poster captures the town as it is now: the older grid at its heart, the railway, the spreading neighbourhoods and the open plateau beyond.
The centre keeps a small, orderly pattern of straight streets and public squares. This planned core is where the rest of the town grew outward from.
The railway passes through the town on its way across the plateau. Its long, steady line stands out against the irregular paths of the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Beyond the town, tracks and small settlements spread across open savanna and shallow valleys, giving the edges of the map a loose, scattered texture.
