Damanhur is the capital of Beheira governorate, on the western side of the Nile Delta. The name goes back to ancient Egyptian and is usually explained as the town of Horus. In Greek and Roman times the town was known as Hermopolis Parva. Today it is a dense market and administrative city surrounded by some of Egypt's most intensively farmed land.
On a Damanhur map poster, the centre is a tightly packed grid of streets with markets and squares. The railway between Alexandria and Cairo passes through the town, and main roads cross it.
