Ko e mape
Danai, also spelled Tanai, lies in the Hukawng Valley of northern Kachin State in Myanmar, one of the country's most remote lowland basins. On the map the town is compact and linear. It follows the main road and the course of the river, with forest and cleared land spreading out on every side.
The road through Danai follows the route of the Ledo Road, built by the Allies during the Second World War to link India with China. Today the valley is better known for amber and gold mining, and for the Hukaung Valley tiger reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Asia.
A Danai map poster is dominated by natural lines: the meandering river, the channels and oxbows on the valley floor, and the long thread of the road cutting through. The settlement itself is modest, a short grid of streets that reads as a small, deliberate mark in a very large landscape.
The Tanai River loops across the valley floor in wide meanders, the most expressive shape on the map and a natural counterpoint to the straight road.
The historic wartime road passes through town as a long, steady line, linking the valley toward the Indian border in one direction and Myitkyina in the other.
Around the town, forest, clearings and waterlogged ground create an uneven texture that stretches far beyond the small built-up area.

This map is for people from Kachin State, for those with family ties to the valley, and for anyone interested in the history of the Ledo Road. It records a place few outsiders ever see, drawn with the same care as a capital city.
