Daocheng is a county town high on the Tibetan Plateau in western China, at an altitude of well over three thousand metres. The map shows a small, orderly settlement in an open valley. A river runs through the valley floor, and the surrounding ridges are crossed only by a few winding roads.
For most visitors, Daocheng is the gateway to the Yading nature reserve to the south, where snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes draw trekkers and pilgrims.
