Daugavpils is the second-largest city in Latvia. It lies in the south-east of the country, on a wide bend of the Daugava River. On a map, the centre has an unusually regular grid of long, straight streets laid out in the nineteenth century. Around it are wooden suburbs, railway lines and several small lakes.
Its best-known landmark is Daugavpils Fortress, built by the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. Its geometric ramparts are still clearly visible from above. The painter Mark Rothko was born in the city in 1903, and a Rothko art centre now occupies a former arsenal building inside the fortress.
