Dazaifu lies in a valley south-east of Fukuoka city, with wooded hills to the north and east. For centuries it was the seat of the government office that administered Kyushu, and the traces of that past remain on the map. There are large open sites of former government buildings, and the town sits between mountain slopes and flat rice land.
The town is best known for Dazaifu Tenmangū, the shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, revered as a god of learning. Students visit before exams, and thousands of plum trees bloom there each spring. The era name Reiwa was drawn from a poem in the Man'yōshū written about a plum-blossom gathering in Dazaifu. A Dazaifu map poster keeps these layers together.
From above, the shrine approach runs straight into the town's older quarter, while the Kyushu National Museum sits on the wooded hillside nearby. Rail lines and roads follow the valley floor toward Fukuoka. In black and white, the poster contrasts dense small streets in the valley with the dark, empty mass of the hills.

Open ground where the Dazaifu government office once stood stands out as a quiet, empty space among the surrounding houses and fields.
Forested slopes frame the town on several sides, giving the map a dark, solid border against the finer lines of the valley.
