Dhankutā is a hill town in Koshi Province, the headquarters of its district and for many years an administrative centre for the whole of eastern Nepal. It sits high on a ridge above the plains, and from above that position shapes everything. The main streets follow the crest, and the rest of the town spreads down the slopes in short, winding lanes.
The road that climbs up from Dharan in the Terai reaches the town in a series of long switchbacks, and on the map those curves are among the most striking lines. A Dhankutā map poster captures the contrast between the tight town centre on the ridge and the looping roads that wind through terraced hillsides around it.
The town is known for its cooler climate compared with the plains below, and for the farming of the surrounding hills, including oranges and tea. The land around it is steep and folded, cut by streams draining to the river valleys. In black and white, the settlement reads as a thin line of streets holding onto the high ground.
The oldest part of town follows the crest of the ridge. Its main street runs along the high ground, and side lanes drop away steeply on both sides.
The road up from Dharan climbs in long hairpin curves. On the poster these bends form a graceful, repeating pattern against the open hillside.
Farmed hillsides surround the town and fall toward the valleys. The map leaves them mostly open, so the scattered paths and hamlets read as fine detail.
