Downtown Washington is one of the most deliberately planned urban centres in the world. Pierre L'Enfant's late eighteenth-century plan overlaid a regular grid of lettered and numbered streets with broad diagonal avenues named after states, meeting at circles and squares. From above, the result is a distinctive pattern of rectangles sliced by long angled lines.
To the south lies the National Mall, a wide open axis running from the Capitol toward the Washington Monument, lined with museums. Pennsylvania Avenue runs diagonally between the Capitol and the White House, tying the two centres of government together. Around them, office blocks, Penn Quarter and Chinatown fill the grid with dense, even texture.
A Downtown DC map poster makes the plan itself the subject. The diagonals and circles give the composition energy, while the Mall provides a calm, empty band across the frame. In black and white the city's formal geometry is at its clearest, and the relationship between the Capitol, the monuments and the streets becomes easy to read.

The long open axis from the Capitol toward the Washington Monument forms a broad green band, framed by museum buildings along both sides.
This diagonal avenue links the Capitol and the White House, a ceremonial route that cuts across the grid and anchors the heart of the map.
