Drean lies in El Tarf province in northeastern Algeria, on the fertile plain south of Annaba. Under French rule it was called Mondovi. On the map the town appears as a compact grid of streets, in a pattern typical of colonial-era settlements, surrounded by vineyards, orchards and farmland.
It is best known as the birthplace of Albert Camus, who was born near the town in 1913. Today it is a farming town, and roads run from it in long straight lines across the plain towards Annaba, El Tarf and the surrounding villages. Rivers and irrigation channels flow through the farmland towards the coast.
