Duitama lies in the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, in the department of Boyacá, at an altitude of about 2,500 metres. It occupies a flat highland valley between mountain ridges. On a map, the colonial grid of the centre is clear, with regular blocks around a main square, and newer districts spread outward across the valley floor.
The slopes rise abruptly at the edges of the valley, and the street pattern breaks up and curves as it climbs them. A main highway passes through the city, connecting it to Paipa and Sogamoso.
