Ko e mape
Dzüünharaa lies in Selenge Province in northern Mongolia, in the valley of the Kharaa River. Its location is set by the Trans-Mongolian Railway, which runs through the town on its way between Ulaanbaatar and the Russian border. On a map the tracks and the main road run side by side along the valley, and the town has grown in a band beside them.
Around the settled area the land opens into the broad grassland and low hills typical of Selenge, the country's main farming province. The river winds across the valley floor in loose meanders, with the town's blocks and fenced household plots laid out on the flatter ground nearby. Beyond them are wide empty spaces, crossed only by a few tracks.
A Dzüünharaa map poster shows a place shaped by transport and terrain: the railway's firm line, the soft curve of the river and the modest grid between them. Rendered in black and white, the wide Mongolian landscape becomes a calm field of space around a small, legible town.
The main line runs straight through the town along the valley, a strong, continuous stroke that gives the composition its backbone.
The river meanders across the valley floor near the town, its looping course softening the straight lines of the railway and road.
Parts of the town are made up of fenced plots, a characteristic Mongolian settlement pattern that forms a distinctive grid of small enclosures on the map.
