Edegem lies just past the southern edge of Antwerp, in Flanders. From above it looks like the city in a softer form: terraced and detached houses along gently curving streets, deep back gardens and a scatter of small parks. Two features stand out. The first is Fort 5, one of the nineteenth-century forts that once ringed Antwerp. Its moat still traces a sharp geometric outline inside a wooded park.
