Ellinikó lies on the Saronic coast south of central Athens, and its map is dominated by one enormous shape: the site of the former Hellinikon International Airport. For decades the long runways and aprons occupied a vast strip of land between the residential streets and the sea. Even as the area is redeveloped, its size remains the defining feature of the plan.
The airport closed in 2001, when Athens moved its flights to the new airport at Spata. Several venues for the 2004 Olympic Games were then built on and around the site, some using the old terminals. More recently, the land has been undergoing large-scale redevelopment, including a large coastal park intended to open the waterfront to the city.
Inland, Ellinikó is a dense residential suburb of regular blocks rising slightly toward Argyroupoli. The coastal avenue and the Athens Metro, whose Line 2 ends here, connect it to the centre. An Ellinikó map poster captures a place in transition: an ordinary street grid next to a huge open space whose future layout is still being written.

The shore runs along the western edge of the suburb, with the coastal avenue tracing it and connecting Ellinikó to neighbouring seaside districts.
Line 2 of the Athens Metro ends at Ellinikó, linking this southern coastal suburb directly with the historic centre of the city.
