Elyria is the seat of Lorain County in northern Ohio, and its layout is shaped by water. The East and West branches of the Black River meet just north of downtown, and each has carved a steep, wooded valley through the flat land. The historic centre sits on the high ground between them, organised around Ely Square.
The town was founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, whose name it carries. In 1919, a local businessman named Edgar Allen started an organisation here to support children with disabilities, which later became Easter Seals. Cascade Park, where the river tumbles over sandstone ledges in two waterfalls, is the city's best-known green space.
An Elyria map poster follows the forked river through a regular Midwestern street grid. The wooded valleys are left as winding gaps, the square is at the centre, and rail lines and highways cross the outer edges. It is a good example of how a river can shape an otherwise orderly town plan.
The East and West branches of the Black River meet north of downtown. Their winding valleys cut through the grid and give the map its defining Y shape.
The central square sits on the high ground between the two branches, with the county courthouse and main streets arranged around it.
In the river valley near downtown, a wooded park follows the gorge past two waterfalls, creating a green, curving gap in the city's street pattern.
