Evesham is a market town in Worcestershire, England. It sits in a pronounced loop of the River Avon that almost encircles the old centre. On a map, the river is unmistakable: a wide horseshoe with the town's streets inside it, bridges crossing at the neck, and newer suburbs spreading beyond the water.
The town grew around its Benedictine abbey, of which the free-standing Bell Tower still stands. In 1265 the Battle of Evesham was fought just outside the town, where Simon de Montfort was killed. The surrounding Vale of Evesham has long been known for market gardening, orchards and asparagus.
