Ko e mape
Faisalabad has one of the most recognisable historic plans in South Asia. At its centre stands a clock tower, and eight bazaars radiate outward from it, a layout often compared to the lines of the Union Jack. From above, this star-shaped core sits inside an enclosing circular road, surrounded by the later grids that grew as the city expanded.
The city was founded under British rule at the end of the nineteenth century and originally named Lyallpur, after a lieutenant governor of Punjab. It was renamed in the 1970s in honour of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Around it, the flat land of the Punjab plain is crossed by irrigation canals, which appear as long straight lines running between districts.
Today Faisalabad is one of the largest cities in Pakistan and a major centre of the textile industry, sometimes called the Manchester of Pakistan. A Faisalabad map poster captures both its planned heart and the broad industrial and residential districts beyond, drawn together by canals and the roads that follow them across the plain.
The central tower marks the meeting point of eight bazaars, creating a star-shaped pattern that is instantly recognisable and dominates the historic core.
Each bazaar runs outward from the centre in a straight line, dividing the old city into wedges that stand out strongly in a minimalist print.
Long, straight canals cross the flat surrounding land and the city itself, part of the network that turned this region into productive farmland.
