Falköping lies in Västra Götaland, in the Falbygden district between Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern. Its most distinctive neighbour is Mösseberg, a flat-topped table mountain that rises right at the edge of town. On a map the streets of Falköping press against its slope, and the plateau above appears as a patch of forest paths and open ground.
Falbygden is one of the richest areas in Scandinavia for Stone Age passage graves, and many of these ancient tombs lie in the fields around the town. Falköping also grew as a railway junction on the Western Main Line, and the tracks cut clearly through the town and set out its main axes.
