Faya-Largeau is the principal town of Chad's northern desert, set in the Borkou region between the massifs of Tibesti and Ennedi. From above, it is an island of activity in a sea of sand. Dark patches of date palms and gardens gather around the settlement, and tracks stretch out across the empty ground in every direction.
The town grew around the oasis and its water, which supports extensive palm cultivation. Its colonial-era name honoured a French officer, Étienne Largeau, and the older name Faya was later joined to it. The street layout is loose and low. Walled compounds and open squares matter more than a formal grid, and the edges fade gradually into the desert.
A Faya-Largeau map poster captures a rare type of place: a town defined less by roads than by the contrast between cultivated ground and open desert. In black and white, the palm groves become a soft texture and the sand a clean expanse of paper. It is a very minimal map, and that suits the landscape it describes.
The oasis gardens form darker, textured areas around the town. On the poster they are the clearest sign of water in a dry landscape.
Unpaved routes leave the town in long, faint lines toward distant settlements. They give the map a sense of scale beyond the frame.
Houses and walled plots cluster in irregular blocks rather than a planned grid. The result is an organic, uneven texture at the centre.
