Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà comarca in northern Catalonia. It sits on a broad plain between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, not far from the French border. Its historic centre is a close network of narrow streets and small squares that open onto the Rambla, a tree-lined promenade through the middle of town that serves as its main public space.
The town is best known as the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, who created the Dalí Theatre-Museum inside the rebuilt shell of the old municipal theatre. On a rise at the edge of town stands the Castell de Sant Ferran, an eighteenth-century fortress whose bastioned walls form a huge star shape. It is one of the largest fortifications of its kind in Europe.
A Figueres map poster shows these layers clearly. It picks out the dense historic core, the later growth along the roads to Girona and the French border, the railway lines and the geometric outline of the fortress. In black and white the star-shaped castle becomes a striking graphic element beside the town it once protected.
The eighteenth-century fortress occupies a rise beside the town. Its angular bastions and outer works form an unmistakable star-shaped outline on the map.
This straight, tree-lined promenade cuts through the centre and connects the historic streets on either side. It makes a clear axis in an otherwise irregular old town.
The Dalí Theatre-Museum sits in the heart of the old town, among the narrow streets where the artist was born. He is buried in the museum's crypt.
