Florin is an unincorporated community in Sacramento County, just south of the city of Sacramento. On a map it is a typical Californian suburban landscape. Long, straight arterial roads divide the land into large squares, and inside each square the residential streets curve and loop around cul-de-sacs. Shopping centres and schools sit along the main roads.
Before its suburban growth, Florin was a farming area, and it has a notable Japanese American history. Japanese immigrant families grew strawberries and grapes here in the early twentieth century, until the forced removals and incarceration of the Second World War broke up the community. That history is still remembered locally, and Florin Road keeps the name in daily use across Sacramento.
A Florin map poster shows the underlying agricultural grid of the Central Valley, still visible in the long straight roads, with twisting suburban streets filling the spaces between. The contrast between the two scales gives the map a clear structure. For people from south Sacramento it captures a familiar landscape of driveways, schools and long roads.
Long, straight main roads divide the area into large squares, a trace of the Central Valley's old farm grid that frames the whole poster.
Inside each large block, residential streets curve into loops and cul-de-sacs, adding a dense, intricate pattern within the straight lines.
The community's namesake road runs across south Sacramento as one of its main east–west routes, a long line cutting through the composition.
