The hilltop village
The historic centre sits on a limestone outcrop with the remains of its medieval castle. Its short, curving lanes form a small knot of dense streets set against the open land around it.

Fos-sur-Mer sits at the western end of the Gulf of Fos, where the Provence coast opens toward the Rhône delta. On a map the town has two scales: a small, tightly wound old village on a rocky rise, and the huge rectangular docks and industrial plots of the port zone that spread across the flat land around it.
The name goes back to the Fossae Marianae, a canal the Roman general Marius had dug to link the Rhône to the sea. That long relationship between water and engineering still shows in the plan. Straight channels, basins and embankments cut through marsh and lagoon, and the older streets curve around the hill where the castle ruins stand.
A Fos-sur-Mer map poster shows something few coastal towns can: a compact Provençal core next to some of the largest harbour infrastructure in the Mediterranean. The gulf's curved shoreline, the étangs inland and the clean geometry of the quays make an unusual composition that stays readable when reduced to black lines on white.
The historic centre sits on a limestone outcrop with the remains of its medieval castle. Its short, curving lanes form a small knot of dense streets set against the open land around it.
West and south of the town, the docks of the Marseille port authority's western basins show as long straight quays, canals and rectangular plots, the most geometric shapes on the whole sheet.
The Gulf of Fos curves along the shore, and inland étangs and marshland break the land into irregular pools, a soft contrast to the straight lines of the industrial zone.

Ko e ha Fos-sur-Mer
People who work at the port, grew up in the old village or spend summers on the gulf beaches often want a map that shows both sides of Fos. The mix of sea, lagoons and industry gives the poster a graphic, almost architectural character.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a family name or the year you arrived, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the port geometry especially well.
