Ko e mape
Fukuchiyama sits in a basin in northern Kyoto Prefecture, surrounded by forested hills, where the Yura River swings through the valley floor. From above, the river is the dominant shape. It is broad and curving, with embankments on either side, and the town gathers on the flat ground inside its bend while rail lines and roads thread along the valley.
The town grew around Fukuchiyama Castle, which Akechi Mitsuhide built in the late sixteenth century. The keep was later reconstructed and stands on a small hill above the centre. The Yura has flooded the town many times over the centuries, and the levees and flood works along the river show how closely the town has had to live with the water.
A Fukuchiyama map poster balances several elements: the sweep of the river, the tidy blocks of the old castle town, the rail junction and the contour-heavy hills around the edge. It has the feel of a classic Japanese regional town, compact and shaped by the land around it.
The river curves through the basin and makes the strongest line on the map. Embankments and bridges show how the town has organised itself around the river and its floods.
The reconstructed keep of Fukuchiyama Castle stands on a low rise near the centre. The original castle is associated with Akechi Mitsuhide, and the old town grew around it.
Wooded slopes close in on every side and leave the town on a narrow valley floor. The result is a strong, self-contained composition.

Ko e ha Fukuchiyama
Fukuchiyama suits anyone drawn to Japanese towns that sit between river and mountain, or anyone who has lived, studied or travelled along the San'in rail lines. The river's curve alone makes an elegant wall piece.
You can set your own title and subtitle, in English or with a personal note, and keep the coordinates line. The Paper and Classic black and white styles suit the calm of a castle town, while Noir, Blueprint and Sand offer other moods.
