Furukawa is the central town of Osaki city in northern Miyagi, set on the wide plain north of Sendai. Its map shows a compact grid of streets around the station, the Eai River curving through the town, and the Tohoku Shinkansen tracks running straight across it. Beyond the streets the land breaks into the fine rectangles of paddy fields.
Furukawa was a city in its own right until 2006, when it merged with neighbouring towns to form Osaki. The area is known for rice: the popular Hitomebore variety was developed at an agricultural research station in Furukawa. The Shinkansen station makes the town a gateway to hot springs and countryside further inland, including Naruko.
A Furukawa map poster balances town and farmland. The station district and older streets form a dense centre, the river adds a soft curve, and the paddy fields around them create a regular texture that reads almost like a woven surface in black and white. It suits both the classic and the lighter Paper style.
The river winds across the town from west to east, the main natural line on the map and a contrast to the straight railway and street grid.
The high-speed line crosses Furukawa in a long straight stroke, with the station at the heart of the town's street pattern.
Around the town, rice fields divide the plain into small regular rectangles, a fine texture that fills much of the print beyond the built-up area.
