Gallipoli has an unusual layout for a map. The historic centre sits on a small limestone island off the Salento coast of Apulia, and a single bridge connects it to the modern town on the mainland. The old town is enclosed by a ring of walls and seafront promenades, and inside it a dense tangle of narrow lanes fills every bit of space.
The name comes from the Greek Kallipolis, meaning beautiful city. The island is guarded by a squat castle at the bridge end, and the Baroque cathedral of Sant'Agata stands near its centre. On the mainland side, straighter streets fan out along the shore towards the beaches that face the Gulf of Taranto.
A Gallipoli map poster shows two towns in one frame: an almost round island of irregular alleys, and a mainland grid that grew up beyond the bridge. With the sea around it and the causeway as the only link, the old town reads clearly, almost like a diagram, which makes this one of the most recognisable small coastal plans in southern Italy.
The historic core fills a compact island ringed by walls and a coastal road. Inside is a close maze of lanes, courtyards and small squares with almost no straight line in it.
One short crossing links the island to the mainland, and the castle stands at its island end. It is the pivot of the whole composition.
Beyond the bridge the newer town is laid out in a regular grid along the Ionian shore. Its order contrasts clearly with the medieval knot on the island.

Ko e ha Gallipoli
Gallipoli is a place people come back to summer after summer, and the island plan is striking enough to hold a wall on its own. It suits anyone who has walked the old walls at sunset or has family roots in the Salento.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps the year of a first visit, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes a strong match for a town surrounded by sea.
