Gaozhou sits in western Guangdong, in the hill country north of Maoming, and from above the first thing you notice is the Jian River. The water curls through the city in a broad bend. The streets pack tightly against both banks, then loosen into villages, fish ponds and the irregular field boundaries of the surrounding countryside.
The region is known across China for its lychee and longan orchards, some of them planted centuries ago. On a map this shows up indirectly: outside the built-up area the land is broken into small, winding lanes that follow the contours of low hills rather than any plan. The city itself is compact, with an older centre near the river and newer blocks spreading outward along the main roads.
A Gaozhou map poster works best at a scale that holds both the river bend and the first ring of hills. In black and white the contrast is clear: the denser grid of the centre against the looser, organic lines beyond, with the Jian River drawn as a single pale ribbon that holds the whole composition together.
The river loops through the city and sets its orientation. Bridges stitch the two banks together, and the curve gives the poster a strong, natural diagonal.
Beyond the urban core, lanes wander between low hills and orchards. On paper they form a fine, irregular mesh that frames the compact centre.
Close to the river the blocks are small and tightly packed. This denser texture marks where the city grew first, before it spread out along its main roads.

Ko e ha Gaozhou
For people from Gaozhou, or from the wider Maoming area, this is a map of home that most poster shops never carry. It also suits anyone who has travelled through Guangdong's lychee country and wants something quieter than a photograph to remember it by.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a family name or a date, and the coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD download costs $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
