Gavar is the administrative centre of Gegharkunik Province in eastern Armenia. It lies at around 2,000 metres above sea level, near the western shore of Lake Sevan. On a map the town is a fairly regular grid of streets on a gently sloping plateau, with the lake off to the east and mountains around the basin.
The Gavaraget river runs through the town toward Sevan. Not far away is the village of Noratus, known for its medieval cemetery with hundreds of khachkars, the carved stone crosses typical of Armenia. On the map, the roads leading out of Gavar connect it to the lakeshore and the nearby villages.
