Ghardimaou lies in the Jendouba Governorate of northwest Tunisia, near the Algerian border. It sits in the upper valley of the Medjerda, Tunisia’s most important river, which flows east through fertile plains towards the Gulf of Tunis. To the north rise the forested hills of the Kroumirie. The valley floor provides a natural corridor for transport and settlement.
The railway between Tunisia and Algeria follows this valley and passes through Ghardimaou, giving the town long-standing importance as a border station. Nearby is Chemtou, the ancient Simitthus, famous in Roman times for its yellow marble quarries. Today its museum and archaeological site draw visitors to the valley.
A Ghardimaou map poster shows a town defined by its corridor. The river, the railway and the main road run roughly in parallel, and the town is tucked between them, with hills rising on either side. In black and white, those long lines give the composition a strong sense of direction and place.
Tunisia’s major river runs through the valley at Ghardimaou, winding across the map and setting the east–west orientation of the town.
The line connecting Tunisia and Algeria passes through the town, a long straight feature that parallels the river and the main road.
The Roman site of Simitthus, known for its marble quarries, lies in the same valley. It is one of the region’s best-known archaeological sites.
