Gherla lies in Cluj County in northern Transylvania, on the Someșul Mic river. In the eighteenth century Armenian merchants settled here and built a new town, once known as Armenopolis, on a deliberately regular plan. That order is still visible from above: straight, evenly spaced streets meet around a central square.
The Armenian Catholic cathedral, a Baroque building, stands on the main square and marks the heart of the historic layout. Gherla is also known for its large prison, housed in a former fortress, which held many political prisoners during the communist period. The river and the railway frame the town.
