Gien Map Poster & Print

Gien stands on the Loire in the Loiret department, at the eastern end of the Loire Valley's château country. From above, the river cuts a wide, calm band across the map. A long, multi-arched bridge crosses it, and the old town rises on the north bank toward the château.

The château was built in the late fifteenth century for Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of Louis XI, and now houses a museum of hunting and nature. Gien is also known for its faience, made in a local manufactory since the early nineteenth century. Much of the riverside town was rebuilt after heavy damage in 1940.

On paper, the Loire with its sandbanks, the bridge and the compact old centre make a clear, graceful composition. A Gien map poster shows one of the classic views of the Loire, turned into clean lines.

The Loire

The river runs broad and shallow past the town, with sandbanks and islands. On the poster it forms a wide band across the sheet.

02

Old stone bridge

A long bridge with many arches links the two banks. It draws a strong line across the river and leads directly into the old town.

03

Château and old town

Streets rise from the quays to the château on its height. The rebuilt riverfront keeps the traditional compact layout of the town.
