Glendale is in the western part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, and like the rest of the Salt River Valley, its map is organised by the mile grid. Main roads run exactly north–south and east–west at one-mile intervals, dividing the city into square sections. Inside each square, residential streets curve and loop, so the overall pattern is a firm grid filled with softer shapes.
One line breaks the grid: Grand Avenue, which runs diagonally toward Phoenix and follows the old railway. Near it lies the historic downtown, with small blocks and older houses, including the Catlin Court area. To the north, the Arizona Canal crosses the city in a long, gentle curve, and dry riverbeds wind in from the desert.
Further west, the Westgate area and State Farm Stadium, which has hosted several Super Bowls, form large open shapes on the map.
